Learn the chords on the computer using youtube and whatever else you can find... and once you know the chords take lessons... or just learn by yourself.

The main things in learning music (and about anything else) are fundamentals and tons of practice. I agree with your Dad that you should learn the basics first. It may be a bit boring but you're building a foundation for future learning, so it is necessary, just like you need to learn the alphabet before you can spell words and make sentences. Don't rush doing the barre chords, you'll get around to them if you hang in there long enough. You have to look for easy songs to do when you're first learning. Just because you like a song doesn't mean you're ready to play it. It's all about your level of skill, which will improve if you are diligent.

Hi,

There are some great guitar earning resources today online so that's really a good way to start. Youtube video's are fine not enough though as they don't provide a systematic learning program. I recommend you take advantage of one of the guitar learning courses offered online. The best I know of is reviewed in the source below. It costs a bit, but it is worth it.

PluckandPlayGuitar has free video based lessons for absolute beginners and assume you know nothing or close to nothing.

It takes you step by step through the basic guitar chords one by one. There's also lessons on guitar scales, techniques and some easy songs to play.

I personally hate guitar lessons. You should start off online and if you can't excel you should take lessons. They work, but are a pain. If you have a true passion you won't give up. Honestly.

Having a chord chart on your wall or handy is a suggestion, and watching youtube tutorials

But ultimately taking lessons with a teacher is gonna help you excel, and practicing a lot...

these are fairly good to get you started but you have to pay to get more intricate lessons. formal, in person lessons are probably the best idea. but practicing an hour or two a day is imperative no matter which way you choose to learn.

at chordie.com (and others like it - search "guitar chords and lyrics for `name of song and artist`") you can look for songs and artists that you like.

also you can get chord lists that show where to place your fingers on the fretboard at:

hope you enjoy these.

it would be better if you took lessons but its pretty easy to teach your self....just practice a lot try learning a little music theory if u want to write your own stuff.....and dont just learn songs learn scales i know that probably sounds lame but when you learn to shred like a master you'll be happy about it

I learned online. Not to gloat or anything, but I'd say It ended pretty well. Actually beginning I kept on thinking, "damn, I suck at this." but a little perseverance made it worth it.
