Well mezzo translates to medium or middle, so yes they can still sing high notes but usually not as high as a soprano. Think of if this way...highest to lowest: soprano, mezzo-soprano, then alto. So they fall between an true soprano and a true alto. They don't have the super high notes like a soprano, and they don't have the super low notes like an alto. Hope that helps. :)

A mezzo-soprano is a voice the director wants buried in the rabble as they can't sing soprano well enough to be a soprano and likewise aren't suitable in tambre or pitch retention for an alto part. It's kind of like affirmative action for the choir- the token squawker. It's sort of the chick who you grew up next door to who had a voice like a hippopotamus and would try to croon along with the radio while out sunbathing and meanwhile on the inside you are screaming, "OH FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!"

The aspiring mezzo-soprano is sometimes a legend in her own mind and is the gal who everyone wishes would NOT audition, yet does so, thinking what a great job she does on REO Spedwagon cover tunes. The director hears her and knows he has to accept her somewhere (because her father is on the school board) so he patronizingly puts his arm around her and says, "I have a SPECIAL part JUST for YOU to sing!" The mezzo is often dizzy enough to soak it all in and think she is da bomb on her "special" part.

The male counterpart of this subterfuge is the baritone voice- which is that never-to-be-remembered, rare combination of voice talent which cannot sing decently high to be a tenor yet sounds like a dying walrus when attempting to descend over the abyss of bass range. The baritone guy usually manages to marry the mezzo gal (who-disturbingly enough- overlooks his severe acne problem) and together they have children that become genetic equivalents of castratos and coloratura contraltos. Together they all form a sickeningly interesting modern day VonTrapp family choir.

Soprano's will usually get the melody while mezzo's will have a harmony parts or a counter melody. Sometime voice crossing occurs and the mezzo's or second soprano's will have the melody.
