since the advent of pop singing, there has been a debate about whether or not classical ( as in opera) technique would be of any help. I would say yes, simply because classical singing gives anyone the basics to ensure a healthy creative way of using the voice.

Once you've trained your voice, and you feel your direction is pop or Broadway, then it would be better to seek out a coach who specializes in that field. (there is a difference, by the way, between teacher and coach, just like in sports)

Best wishes and keep on singing

Not usually. Some famous musical theatre singers use classically trained opera teachers to advance their technique.

Most american idol types and pop stars use teachers who are probably affiliated with record labels and producers.

Opera singing and modern pop singing are two completely different styles of singing. If one were interested in being a pop modern singer, they would probably go to a teacher who is familair with studio recording as opposed to going to a teacher who is familiar with producing an un-mic'd stage voice.
