software to create music on my laptop?

I've always wanted to be a singer, i love music. the thing is i can't play any instruments and none of my friends are musical types like myself. Is there a program or a specific software that is compatible with Windows Vista which i can install on my laptop where i can record my vocals and create musical beats n stuff in the background. And what equipment should i purchase e.g a microphone, headphones etc.
I must sound like a real amateur the way i've written the question but i want to record music, music is literally my life. Thanx :)

i personally recommend ableton live 8, best software for music in my opinion unless you can afford pro tools studio 9, microphone... if you ever wanted to record instruments buy a condenser mic because its purposely designed for recording instrument frequency's, for vocals get a dynamic mic, i recommend a shure sm57 or sm58, either one is amazing and then to connect these microphones up you would need to purchase a recording interface, i have the Saffire 6 usb interface and recommend because its absolute amazing and so compact and strong!
