I have a new Shure SM58 microphone. I thought I would use it to record me singing and playing the guitar at the same time. I bought a 3.5mm adapter so I could hook it to my computer, however in order for it to work I have to be literally 2 inches away from it. What else do I need? A preamp? Please give me some ideas... and my budget is under $50.

dynamic mics like sm58's are close range, one of them alone wont be any good for recording vocals and guitar at the same time.

get an audio interfaces that will enable you to plug the mic into you computer through usb, if you get one that has 2 inputs you can plug your mic for vocals in one input and your guitars jack straight into the other input. there are a lot of virtual amps and DAWs around that you can steal online

and you should be able to get an interface for under $50

hope my answer makes sense

You are using a low impedance mic with a high impedance connection. You need to go into a direct box first. You need one with a low Z input and high Z output. Any music staore can help you with this.
