I would suggest lessons. I mean if you are in a choir, then you might not need lessons, but it is really hard to sing and play the piano at the same time unless you are good with both. If you don't want to always take lessons regularly maybe just take an hour long private lesson to get pointers on what you are doing wrong and how to fix the problem. Personally I think it is best to take short lessons every week because even if you think you sound really good there are things in your voice that you can't tell unless someone else tells you, like you pallet is down or you are not singing forward enough. Lessons really help your voice get better.

If you really want to learn how, I'm sure you'll be able to teach yourself. Especially if you get some sheet music and play it on the piano, you'll be able to tune your voice by playing and the note and singing the note until your voice sounds the same as the note you're playing on piano. However if you do struggle with this, lessons are also a tremendous help. But if you really want to do this and you're willing to work towards it, you should be able to do well on your own. Good luck!

Unless you understand what is "wrong" with your voice and know the steps to correct it, it is difficult to teach yourself to sing. (Like trying to teach yourself fractions without a teacher, math book, etc) Usually if you want to improve, you need the help of someone who knows how to do it.
