I'm trying out for a school musicl & to try out, I need to do a monologue which should be easy, & sing a verse&chorus of a song that 'showcases my voice.' I chose POPULAR by Kristin Chenoweth, cos I love her, the song, & the play Wicked. I sound pretty good singing it, but is this the type of song that will show off my voice? Thy said not to pick songs like 'happy birthday' or 'twinkle twinkle little star' because songs like that dont do anything for your voice, anyone can sing thse songs & sound decent. So, my question is, is this one of those songs, or this is a song that will show off my voice & show the good & bad aspects of it?

THANKS- ill pick a best answer.

I LUV Wicked!! I flew 2 NYC spicifically to see it on broadway! Ok, well. Popular is a great song, but it only fits one kind of voice : very high and vibratey. If your voice does not vibrate, and it is not very high pitched, choose a different song. Trust me-if u dont have the right voice it will sound terrible. However, if u do have a high pitched voice, GO 4 IT! I would say stay away from all Wicked songs, ( besides Popular! ) because most of them are duets, and once again, only fit one voice. If u have the right voice for "Popular" then it is perfect. It shows a wide range of sound, but it is also balanced, so u arent flinging your voice up, down, and all over town. Good Luck in the show! Im sure u will get in!

There's another really good song from Wicked that complements basically all types of voices; most high school chorus teachers do it at one point or another because of that. It's called Defying Gravity. It's really pretty, but not slow so if you prefer slow songs don't do this. It's also not advisable to do this song if you're an alto or know you don't have a somewhat high voice. I think it's a good song, though, so good luck with your auditions ^_^!!

NOT AT ALL!

This is a great song to sing for auditions if you can pull of the cutsie wootsie look.

If you belt it all, that would be even better. :]

Because it would show off your belting and your personality.

THE BAD ASPECT of it is that there's not a lot of notes to hold that will show off your vibrato if you want to show it off.

If you want to show off your vibrato, then I suggest a song from Rent like "Take Me or Leave Me"

Well, most of the time, They look for people with the most pizazz. so even if your voice is bad and your very very nervous, just have as much fun as possible, and dont worry if you look like an idiot just have a personality, and stand out.
